Chapter Nine

Travis braced for the lecture. He was barely awake and half-starving because the sandwich he’d had for dinner the night before had long worn off. That was what happened when a steering wheel jammed into your side half the night. He’d finally drifted off in time to see Andie slipping around the front of his car. Talk about a wakeup call.

But no one was screaming at him now. Gone were her odd excuses and infuriating talk about her weight. Yes, she wasn’t super skinny. He didn’t give a damn about that. He wanted to yell and rip things apart until she believed him about how attractive she was, but he walked in silence with Karl instead. They hiked back up the driveway and circled around the buildings and into the woods to the construction pile. All without saying a word.

Before Travis could reach for the first piece of wood, Karl turned around and stared him down with arms crossed and fire in his dark eyes. “What was that about?”

“Nothing.” Travis wanted to say “private,” but there was a limit on how much attitude he could show this man.

The relationships with Austin and Spence were different. They were closer in age and temperament. Travis viewed them as friends as well as bosses, though it looked like that last part would change soon. He could joke with them, call them names, laugh at how they dealt with their women. Karl stood at another level. He was the man who had saved Travis and he deserved a better payback than sarcasm.

And the thin line of his lips suggested he was not impressed at the moment. “Since when do you yell at women and boss them around?”

Travis refused to believe he’d slipped to that level. “I wasn’t doing that.”

Karl’s eyebrow lifted. “Really?”

“Fine.” Travis lost his temper. He’d own that part. Probably needed to apologize to Andie for it at some point.

She’d dealt with a shitty boyfriend. She expected a different life here, and she deserved that. Not that he was her boyfriend, but the thought didn’t send him running. He liked the idea of her, of them together.

No question about it, he was losing his mind over her and his control looked iffy, too.

He blew out the long breath he was holding as a kick of guilt pounded him in the chest. “It’s just...”

“Spit it out, son.” Karl made the command without raising his voice. The way he strung words together and his formidable presence despite being a good inch shorter than Travis demanded attention.

“It doesn’t matter.”

“Travis, say it now.”

Karl’s second order gave Travis permission and the words tumbled right out. “She drives me batshit crazy.”

There, he spilled it. He looked at her and the world tilted sideways. She argued with him, and it fueled a need inside of him. She flashed him a smile or pushed that sexy hair off her shoulder, and he ached with the need to get her naked. He couldn’t come up for air no matter how hard he tried.
